Shimla: The Himachal Government is taking bold steps to combat plastic pollution. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced at the World Environment Day function that a comprehensive policy will be devised within a year to identify alternative materials for plastic. Industries will be encouraged to explore new options and plastic usage will be phased out entirely.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the potential of utilizing plastic for road construction and called for integrating environmentally-focused subjects into the education system to promote awareness among students.
The government is actively seeking alternatives to boost and preserve the environment said the Chief Minister. He asked for everyone’s cooperation in taking steps to reduce pollution and protect the environment.
CM highlighted the impacts of climate change, such as changing weather patterns and increasing water crisis across the country, which is evident from the fact that many states were demanding extra water from Himachal.

Chief Minister shed light on the first budget of his government and reaffirmed his commitment towards creating a sustainable and ecologically responsible greener future for the state. He mentioned that the government has prioritized environmental concerns by presenting a green budget and funding renewable energy efforts, while also addressing the issue of single-use plastics.
To further support sustainability, government vehicles will be replaced with electric ones within the next three years. Additionally, the promotion of solar and wind energy production in the state is being encouraged.
Chief Minister said the state government was committed to safeguarding the environment and promoting eco-friendly transportation. Accordingly, a 50% subsidy is being offered on the purchase of electric buses, trucks, and taxis in the state as part of this endeavor. The aim is to curtail carbon emissions and enhance the income of individuals involved in the transportation sector, he added.
Himachal Pradesh has emerged as the frontrunner in pioneering the establishment of green corridors in the country. The state has already begun infrastructure development to support this initiative.

Furthermore, the government is actively working towards green hydrogen production, with promising results expected in the near future. An ambitious target has also been set to transform Himachal Pradesh into a Green Energy State by March 31, 2026, said Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Underscoring the state’s efforts in promoting green energy, the Chief Minister appealed to the Central Government to grant a greater share in hydro power projects. He said that Himachal Pradesh is committed to its role as a pioneer in sustainable energy initiatives.
In support of environmental conservation, the Chief Minister distributed 9 Dona-Pattal machines to women self-help groups and provided solar lights to 20 Ekal Naris (single women) as a mean of promoting sustainable practices. He also released the batch and poster of ‘Mission Life.’
As a gesture towards fostering environmental awareness, the Chief Minister was presented a jacket made from recycled plastic waste.
