A popular sheep rearing village on the way to Bharmour (48 km from Chamba) is known for its highly sacred and famous temple of Shakti Devi constructed by King Meru Verman. The village is all about revolving around the temple. The village is mostly inhabited by the Gaddis, who are known for their sheep-rearing activity. The ancient historically valued village is in between the thick deodar forests, not only serving the good religious values but also the fine climate.
Talking in detail about the main throne of the village, the temple-”Shakti Devi” This wooden roofed temple was constructed long back in 680 AD. The temple houses an attractive metallic idol of Devi, 54 inches in height and is supposed to be made out of panchola – an alloy of 5 metals which is quite bright and radiant to gaze at. There is another statue of Gugga placed next to the statue of Shakti Mata who is believed to be the master craftsman constructing the idol.
Many sentimental values are attached to this holy temple. Coming to the interiors of the temple, it has excellent wood carvings and amazing paintings. The exotic paintings of Gods and Goddesses revealing their lives are highlighted using the natural vegetable dyes.
In the month of September on the third day of the Mani Mahesh fair, Chahtrari fair is organized. The local people can be seen performing mask dance and most importantly the Shakti Mata is bathed in the holy water brought from Manimahesh Lake. The village is a great place to have a stay and witness all the traditional activities and the local culture in a great climatic view.
