Like most places, Portugal is most popular during the summer months, particularly known for golden beaches and cliffs, positioning itself as an ideal summer holiday destination. However, due to its mild climate, travellers continue to choose Portugal all year-round as there is plenty to do even if it isn’t quite beach day weather.
Depending on the type of holiday you have in mind will determine what the best time of year would be to visit the Algarve. Each season offers a different way to experience the Algarve, here’s what you can expect throughout the year.
Spring in the Algarve
With spring come sunnier days, and temperatures start to increase. Spring is one of the best times to be able to explore the Algarve at a more relaxed pace with fewer visitors around. In summer, it can sometimes get too hot, which restricts how much exploring you can do.
If you like to get out on your travels, the milder weather is ideal for getting outdoors for activities such as hiking or playing golf. It is also a great time to explore popular attractions like the islands of the Ria Formosa, which will be noticeably quieter during spring.

Another advantage of visiting the Algarve before peak summer is the better value accommodation; there is more availability to choose from and lower prices. Although spring is hard to beat for sightseeing and exploring, there can be occasional rain along with cooler evenings, which isn’t ideal if you’re looking for a sunny break.
Summer in the Algarve
If your perfect Algarve holiday involves spending hours at golden beaches, swimming in the sea and warm evenings, Summer will be the best time of year for you to visit. The hot weather is ideal for water activities along the coastline such as boat trips, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Restaurants and bars are always buzzing in the summer months for groups or families looking for a livelier trip.

I’m sure it doesn’t come as a surprise, but of course the sunshine attracts lots of visitors, making the summer a very busy period, where popular destinations such as Albufeira can be particularly crowded. Alongside the demand comes an increase in flight and accommodation prices, so you will pay that bit more to visit in the Algarve in the sunshine. That being said, if you book ahead, you can still get great deals. If this all sounds perfect but you prefer it to be slightly quieter, June can be a great month to experience the Algarve’s summer weather before the crowds arrive.
Autumn in the Algarve
Saying goodbye to the end of August doesn’t necessarily mean you have to wave goodbye to the sunny days too. September quite often still brings plenty of sunny days for you to enjoy the Algarve beaches without the hustle and bustle the school holiday brings. And in fact, the sea is at its warmest in September as it has had the whole summer of sun to warm up.
As the crowds disappear, the popular towns become more relaxed and, similarly to spring, the slightly cooler weather makes sightseeing and activities much more enjoyable. In September, you can do a mix of beach days and exploring. Autumn is a great time of year to visit the Algarve if you’re into food and wine. You can try out the local wine by visiting a local vineyard, there are plenty of day trips which will take you to local vineyards for you to explore and get a taste of their local wines.

As you go into November, the weather tends to become cooler with a greater chance of rain. However, If you’re wanting the best of both worlds, September and early October offer a combination of beach weather and fewer crowds.
Winter in the Algarve
As expected, temperatures are considerably cooler in the winter, however, the weather does tend to stay relatively mild, making it an appealing choice for those looking for a winter escape. Similar to spring, if not more so, the number of visitors is considerably less during winter. This is perfect for a trip filled with hiking, sightseeing and maybe even golf.
With fewer visitors, you can enjoy an uncrowded coastal walk. It is still warm enough to be able to take a stroll along the coast or eat your lunch outside on the seafront. With it being out of season, you are able to stay in Algarve villas for a discounted rate in comparison to peak season. This is a great option for those wanting to stay in more luxury accommodation but without the luxury price.

Conclusion
There is no such thing as a bad time to visit the Algarve, it depends on what you want to get from your trip and if the weather is a priority for you or how crowded the resort is.
If soaking up the sunshine and spending long days at the beach is your priority, the summer months are hard to beat. For those who want to explore, hike and sightsee without the peak-season crowds, spring and autumn offer a great balance of pleasant weather and a more relaxed atmosphere. Meanwhile, winter is ideal for a peaceful escape, with quieter towns, coastal walks and more affordable accommodation.
For the best of both worlds, May, June, September and early October are particularly good times to visit. You can still enjoy plenty of sunshine while avoiding some of the crowds and higher prices that come with the height of summer. Ultimately, whenever you choose to visit, the Algarve has something to offer in every season.
