Ideally located on the banks of River Beas, Mountaineering Institute Manali was set up in 1961 and today is the largest Adventure sports training center in the country. All the mountaineering institutes are affiliated to IMF (Indian Mountaineering Foundation).
Spread over 20 acres of forested land, DMAS is one of the renowned and largest mountaineering training institute in the Indian Himalayas providing technical climbing experience and different disciplines of adventure activities.
The hostel at DMAS can accommodate 260 people at a time, a dining hall to cater more than 200 people and an auditorium that can house 680 people. The Institute also has library, museum and lecture hall.
The popular peaks in Himachal for climbing are Deo Tibba, hanuman Tibba, Mulkila and Indrasan. Among the easier ones are Sitidhar and patalsu in Manali region. Besides Manali adventure courses are also conducted at Dharamshala, Bharmaur and Jispa by the regional Mountaineering Institutes. Patalsu peak is however popular with rock climbing enthusiasts.
Anyone can enrol in any of the courses provided by the institute to equip themselves with appropriate and responsible mountaineering principles and knowledge. At DMAS one can undertake a Basic Mountaineering Course, Adventure Course, Snow Skiing, Water Course etc. All the instructors are professionally qualified and they have years of experience in this field.
