Built in 1750, the Sujanpur Fort once housed the Katoch rulers, including Raja Sansar Chand, and was considered one of the most beautiful palaces in the Himalayas. Today, all that remains are traces of its historical grandeur.
Located atop a hill and overlooking the famous Chaugan, this fort, only 22 km from Hamirpur, is a fine example of the golden age of the former Kangra Princely State. Despite being demolished in the 1905 earthquake, the fort remains a jewel of the town. It welcomes visitors with heartwarming wall paintings and beautiful structures.
The fort complex houses three temples, with the Gauri Shankar Temple being the main attraction. The entrance hall, known as Baradari, is especially remarkable and ornate. As a double storey building, the fort is characterized by elegant curves, perfect alcoves, and spacious rooms. The fort is now under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India, who are making efforts to restore it to its original state.
The Sujanpur Fort is a captivating tourist destination and a rich source of historical and architectural heritage.
