Known by the name of snow cock Komic is a tiny village in Spiti Valley positioned at an elevation of 15027 feet. This village is well recognized for its exquisite beauty and is rich in culture and tradition. This quaint little village is world’s highest motorable village. Komic takes you thousands of miles away from your restricted speculations offering a stretch of ancient monasteries which is certainly a delight to everyone. Mid May-September is the ideal months to visit the place.
It holds the precious Lundup Tsemo Gompa Monastery stands to welcome at the entrance of the village, which bears the matery Buddha (future Buddha) dates to more than 500 years old. It is said to possess the complex inside which is also the residential area of the lamas (temple monks). The interior and the exterior of the Komik Monastery are painted in beautiful bright colors. However, women are not allowed to enter during the prayers. The monastery leads the way to the village which is 500 meters walk down on a barren land inhabiting mostly shepherds grazing the yaks, sheeps, and horses. Apart from this, there is another monastery in the village- the14th century Tyangud Monastery built as a castle on the edge of a deep canyon, there’s a monk standing under the stuffed leopard known as one of the highest altitude gompas (monasteries) in India, located on the periphery of the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.
The tourists visiting this place enjoy the cultural dances performed here. The Lama’s perform the Chham dance or the mask dance which is based on defeating the evil. This village doesn’t have hotel facilities but it offers you the homestays with basic room and bedding. The temperature in winter drops here from -25 to -35 degrees and the village is fully submerged under the snow which cuts it off from rest of the world.
