Delhi: In a move set to modernize commuter travel, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will soon roll out a virtual smart card system through its Momentum 2.0 mobile application. Expected to roll out by late August or early September, the new feature will enable passengers to use their smartphones for multiple journeys, offering a convenient alternative to physical cards and single-use QR tickets.

Currently, travellers use QR codes from the Momentum app for single journeys, but the new virtual smart card system will enhance this by enabling multiple journeys with a single QR code. Passengers can recharge a virtual wallet on their smartphones, eliminating the need to purchase new tickets for each journey.
“We are excited to introduce the ‘store value QR code’ system, which will simplify the ticketing process,” said a DMRC spokesperson. “This feature will allow commuters to top up their QR wallet on the mobile app as needed, streamlining travel and removing the necessity for physical or virtual QR tickets for each journey.”

The virtual smart card will function similarly to the current physical smart cards but will be stored digitally on users’ smartphones. Commuters can recharge their virtual wallet as required and generate a QR code for their travels. Additionally, the virtual card can be accessed through Amazon Pay, allowing users to select their destination stations, make payments, and receive mobile QR tickets instantly.
This new system is designed to offer greater convenience, particularly for frequent commuters, by reducing the need to manage physical tickets and passes. It also promises to ease the travel experience, aligning with the DMRC’s efforts to incorporate more technology into public transportation.
