Goa has witnessed a significant increase in tourist footfall, reaching the one crore-mark in the recently concluded tourist season, according to Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte. The minister dispelled perceptions of a decline in tourist numbers, stating that the state has seen a notable rise in international tourists, with a 150% increase compared to pre-COVID-19 figures.
Khaunte attributed the growth to the state’s diverse offerings beyond its beaches, which attract tourists during the monsoon season. He noted that hotel occupancy rates during the monsoon period have reached 80%, with tourists flocking to Goa to experience its lush green landscapes, waterfalls, and rural tourism.

The minister acknowledged the competition from other Indian states and international destinations, particularly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ initiative. To address this challenge, Khaunte emphasized the need to connect with new markets and improve Goa’s affordability during peak months like December.
Discussions will be initiated with airlines and the hotel industry to cap their tariffs during the tourist season, including December, said Khaunte. The minister also highlighted the importance of promoting rural tourism in the state, which helps boost the local economy.

Khaunte expressed optimism about the future of tourism in Goa, stating that the state has prepared a vision document for the industry, which will be implemented with the active participation of stakeholders. He emphasized that Goa needs to adapt to the changing tourism landscape and focus on providing value for money to tourists.
The minister’s comments come as a relief to the tourism industry, which has been grappling with the impact of global conflicts and the rise of cheaper destinations. The increased tourist footfall is expected to boost the local economy and provide a much-needed uplift to the state’s tourism sector.
