Shimla: Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the first outdoor escalators in Himachal Pradesh at the Hanuman temple Jakhu in Shimla on Thursday. Installed by Schindler India, these escalators perched at a height of 2455 meters above sea level are a welcome improvement for pilgrims visiting the ancient temple at the top of the highest peak of the state capital.
The ₹7.94 crore project comprises four escalators with a carrying capacity of 6,000 people per hour, making the climb from the parking lot to the temple much easier for the pilgrims.
The escalators have a double-drive system and safety brakes on both sides to ensure passenger safety. Each level of the escalators features paintings depicting the storyline of Ramayana.

The facade combines louvers and polycarbonate sheets, allowing natural light to filter through. ACP sheets on the lower part of the escalators provide ventilation. LED spotlights enhance the pilgrims’ experience.
Jakhu temple, a revered religious site, draws countless visitors seeking spiritual solace. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu affirmed that this is just the beginning. Plans are afoot to improve other basic facilities, ensuring pilgrims receive the utmost care and comfort during their sacred sojourn.
Chief Minister also paid obeisance at the Hanuman Temple during the inaugural ceremony. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh were also present on the occasion.
