Expedition cruise operator Polar Latitudes Expeditions has added a new vessel, Discoverer, to its fleet, marking a strategic expansion of its Antarctic programme. The ship, previously known as Exploris One, will replace the current vessel Seaventure and begin sailing Antarctic voyages from the 2026–27 season.

The move reflects Polar Latitudes’ shift from chartered vessels to owned ships, providing the company with greater control over onboard experiences and expedition planning.

“By replacing a chartered vessel with one that we own, we strengthen our ability to shape the expedition experience from start to finish,” said Anders Kristensen, Chief Commercial Officer at Polar Latitudes Expeditions. “This allows us to refine every aspect of the journey, from expedition planning to onboard learning, ensuring travellers experience Antarctica in the most immersive way possible.”

Built at Finland’s Rauma shipyard, Discoverer has a history of polar exploration under names including Silver Explorer and Prince Albert II. A major refurbishment in 2023 upgraded guest accommodations, modernized technical systems, and redesigned public spaces.

Additional enhancements are planned ahead of its Antarctic debut to align with the company’s small-ship expedition philosophy, emphasizing expert-led learning and responsible travel.

The addition of Discoverer will enable an expanded Antarctic departure calendar, including the company’s Crossing the Antarctic Circle itinerary, a milestone journey sought after by expedition travellers worldwide. Guests previously booked on Seaventure will sail aboard Discoverer in equivalent cabins.

Outside of Antarctica, the vessel will operate voyages for sister brand Heritage Expeditions, including routes through Chilean fjords and Patagonia, expanding Polar Latitudes’ global expedition portfolio.

The expansion comes amid rising interest in polar and expedition cruising among Indian luxury and adventure travellers, who are increasingly seeking remote, once-in-a-lifetime destinations. Polar Latitudes emphasizes small ships, expert-led teams, and immersive wildlife encounters to provide deeper understanding of fragile environments while maintaining responsible travel standards.

Founder John McKeon described the addition of Discoverer as a milestone in the company’s long-term fleet strategy. “Discoverer represents the next step in building one of the most comprehensive expedition cruise programmes in the industry,” he said.

Polar Latitudes Expeditions was formed through the joining of Polar Latitudes and Albatros Expeditions, bringing more than four decades of experience in expedition cruising to its portfolio of Antarctic and Arctic itineraries.
