The lake lies in the foothills of Mighty Dhauladhar range at about 2934 meters above the sea level. The majestic feel of the lake is its shallow waters, coming from the melting snow. The frozen kareri lake during winters is best known as the Dauladhar trek resting place.
Speciality of every lake or a destination in Himachal is, you found a temple nearby. Similarly, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti on top of a hill,overlooking the lake. Kareri Lake is also the base camp to some exciting pass crossings over Dhauladhar. Bleni Pass is 20 km from Kareri Lake and Minkiani Pass is 4.5 km from Kareri Lake. One can crossover these passes to enter Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.

While the Dhauladhar Range adds to the mesmeric appeal of this lake, the fact that it remains frozen during early December to March/April, serves as the main attraction of this trek. The Kareri Lake trekking originates from either from Mcleodganj or Kareri village of Himachal Pradesh and takes the trekkers through lush forests, narrow terrains, passes, scenic meadows and much more. While on this trek, the trekkers can also participate in local tours and adventure activities.
