Indian travellers visiting Malaysia will soon be able to make UPI payments directly to local merchants, extending the reach of the digital payment system of India to one of Southeast Asia’s most visited destinations.

Razorpay is leading the initiative through Curlec, a Malaysian entity acquired by the company, in partnership with NPCI International Payments Limited, the international division of the National Payments Corporation of India. The collaboration was formalised during the Global Fintech Fest 2025.

The system will enable visitors to make immediate payments through UPI applications without international cards or currency exchange concerns. Transactions will settle in Malaysian ringgit through the Curlec platform operated by Razorpay, linking Malaysia to the real-time payment network used in India.

UPI processed nearly 20 billion transactions in September 2025, highlighting its scale within India. Malaysian merchants will be able to receive payments through this network, providing convenience for travellers and new payment options for local businesses.

Shashank Kumar, Managing Director and Co-founder for Razorpay, said UPI has transformed the way payments are made in India, showing what innovation and inclusion can achieve on a large scale. He added that through Curlec, the company aims to bring the same payment experience to Malaysia to help businesses and travellers carry out fast and reliable transactions, contributing to broader fintech cooperation across Asia.
