There’s nothing better than travelling and exploring new places in the world. Whether you are travelling for experience or to a foreign land, the reasons for travelling can be specific to the traveller.

For most travel enthusiasts, they wouldn’t be able to list one single drawback either. But one downside could be spending large periods of time away from your home comforts while you set up camp in a travel home.

The rise of platforms like Airbnb and Home Exchange offering tourist rentals means travellers now have new ways to feel at home while not at home. Staying in someone else’s home provides you with a private space and more space than you’d benefit from if staying in a hotel or hostel. But still, nothing quite beats the comfort of your own home.

This article will explore a number of ways you can transform an Airbnb or travel home into a place that feels like home. Make sure to continue reading to find out more!

Keep Your Home Clean and Tidy

Many of us take a lot of pride in our own homes but struggle to find the same motivation to keep our temporary homes quite as tidy. If you want to make a house a home, regardless of how long you intend to stay there, the bare minimum is putting away mess and keeping spaces clean.

This includes carrying out all the daily chores that you would do in your full-time home. Make the bed every morning to ensure you walk into a welcoming, tidy bedroom each evening. Ensure you don’t end up with a pile of dirty clothes by keeping on top of your laundry, and resist the urge to let dirty plates pile up in the sink in your travel home.

Take Items From Home

One of the quickest and easiest ways to make a house feel more homely is by adding touches that are personal to you. In most cases, this won’t cost you a penny either which is great for those who are travelling on a budget.

Whether it’s adding pictures of your parents to your wall or a small photo of your pet to your bedside table, reminders of the most important people (and animals!) in your life are a great way to transform your space.

Similarly, any gifts that your loved ones have given you can act as a nice reminder of home. If you’re travelling for a long period of time, you may find that people will send you on your way with a gift. Letting these gifts take pride of place in your new home can be both practical and sentimental.

How To Turn Your Vacation House Into A Home

Avoid Living Out of a Suitcase

For some reason, even the most organised of people can lead a messy lifestyle when travelling. While it can be tempting to live out of a suitcase, this will only prevent you from feeling comfortable in your new space.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re travelling for the short term or the long term, unpacking and organising your belongings on day one can go a long way to making you feel at home. You’ll find that completing simple tasks like this often lead to a more organised mindset in general.

Add Decorative Touches

It’s the little things that make a house a home. When it comes to decorating your travel home, don’t just think about the additions that serve a practical function. Consider touches like decorative cushions, luxury throws and ornaments that add a bit of personality to the house.

It may be a good idea to purchase these types of items from local shops or markets once you arrive at your destination. That way, you can put a cultural twist on your own personal tastes to create a homely space whilst also immersing yourself in the local culture.

Consider Air Quality

Travellers are increasingly drawn to diverse cultures and unique experiences, even in countries with less-than-ideal air quality. If you are travelling to such destinations, this can be a major contributing factor to preventing you from feeling at home.

To counteract this, decorate your travel home with plants that can help to improve the quality of air. For countries with extremely poor air quality, you may even want to invest in an air purifier.

Create Space for Hobbies

Your home is geared around you, so your temporary home should be too. If you like to start your day with a morning yoga session, ensure there is a space dedicated to this in your new space. If you’re a gym freak, dedicate a room to this and ensure there is space to complete a home workout.

To many people, cooking is an enjoyable activity. If this sounds like you, consider a temporary home that has ample space to cook up all your favourite recipes while you are away from home.
